When I was 28, I was diagnosed with Non-hodgkins lymphoma Here’s an XRay of this tumor before treatment, and 3 months after
Was cleaning up my desktop and found them in an old folder. The first one is dated April 23rd, 2005 -the second, July 28th, 2005. So that was 3 months of chemo, and my cycle was every 21 days. It shrunk that much in 3 treatments.
In the second image, the ‘mass’ in the middle of my chest is mostly my heart. The ‘wispy’ bits are scar tissue caused by the cancer.
Total cost of treatment, if averaged out, came to about $100,000 per month. My entire out of pocket was only $1200, the cost of my insurance deductible.
Now, less than 5 years after that, I can’t find insurance anywhere near as comprehensive and complete as I had back then. It’s not because of what happened to me, it just seems to not exist; at least not for the price I paid.
Just something to think about. I was a reasonably healthy 28 year old. Then I couldn’t breathe. Then I found out I had an 11cm tumor intertwined around my heart and lungs.
I went from everything fine, to hospital with a catheter inserted in my myocardia (the sac around the heart) to drain the fluid from inflammation in the span of 8 hours.
EDIT: Oh yeah, before I forget. The entire ordeal was both the worst, and the best, thing that has ever happened to me.
